GPS Personal Navigation Device Vs The Smartphone

Posted by Zily Magic

As GPS devices and applications flood the market, how do you know which type of GPS system you should have? Do you think to yourself, "It doesn't really matter because they all do the same thing," right? Wrong? There are some major differences we should all know about before making that choice.
The GPS applications found on smart phone devices such as Androids, iPhones, and Palms though extremely portable and handy, are not necessarily "mount friendly". When placed on the windshield or dashboard it becomes difficult to see the screen clearly and to manually operate. Understandably, the fonts and buttons are smaller than what you would have on a dedicated GPS unit.
It goes without saying that the obvious benefits to these smart devices include their multifunctional designs and their connectivity to the cellular network and the internet. Such connectivity allows for a more sophisticated GPS search capability, real-time traffic alerts and added services such as exploring local gas prices. Being able to effortlessly find a particular type of restaurant or service while you're on a road trip or in unfamiliar territory is a key element.
The GPS personal navigation devices (PND) on the other hand are well suited to the road warrior, particularly if he is the only one in the car who is awake! These GPS devices tend to have larger screens, stronger speakers and can easily be seen from a dashboard or windshield mount. The touch screen keyboards, which display large numbers and letters, have been optimized for usability at arm's-length while driving. There is no need to take your eyes or your attentions off the road to use this GPS device, which makes for safer traveling. Because of the larger screens, more data can be displayed simultaneously, including estimated times of arrival to your programmed destination, distances to upcoming turns, upcoming street names, speed limits etc. Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, and Lowrance provide variety of excellent options for anyone in the market for a dedicated GPS device.
Today's smart phones have a light touch and elegant look. They use capacitive touch screen technology, which makes them a pleasure to use from the palm of your hand. However, while driving they do present a disadvantage with their smaller screens and keyboards and weaker speakers. In these particular areas, the dedicated GPS PND has the upper hand. Easily mounted, it can be clearly seen and operated due to its larger screen and keyboard. And yes, the speakers are louder as well. The GPS PND is a better choice for those longer, preplanned road trips, as well as for those of you who simply enjoy the occasional "going out for a drive" - even if you have no particular destination.
I personally enjoy having both systems as GPS devices at my disposal. Depending on the situation, both devices perform excellently GPS within it prescribed parameters. It's like apples and oranges. Both are delicious fruit, but one cannot satisfactorily take the place of the other.

Mobile Phone Tracking Globally

Posted by Zily Magic

Today's traveller will take their mobile everywhere - to the most remote and sometimes the most dangerous places on earth. Mobile phone tracking systems can help a business to keep its employees safe as they travel but can they be relied on to work everywhere?
To answer this question we need to look a little deeper at the technology
1. GPS
GPS will work pretty much anywhere with one big proviso - the device has to have a view of the sky. So if the device is indoors, GPS is not going to work. Therefore any tracking application should have a fallback mode that uses cell-tower locations when GPS isn't available.
2. Mobile Comms
All mobile tracking applications have to send their tracking data back to a central point for it to be viewed. They will do this using a mixture of SMS or data (GPRS). Both transports need the phone to be in a coverage area, close enough to a cell-tower. If the phone can't make a call, it can't send the information. Therefore, in the areas of the world that are most remote, it's not going to be possible to get a regular feed of information from a mobile tracking phone. However, you should look for an application that continues to take location readings, storing them so that when it does return to coverage, it patches the missing information. The other alternative is to use a satellite device but SMS and data costs can quickly become prohibitive which leads onto the next point...
3. Mobile data costs
Mobile phone tracking is most useful when people travel the world - particularly to areas of high risk. However, many products are aimed at a single domestic country without much thought for use abroad. If your tracking phone is sending regular SMS and lots of data on a domestic SIM as you roam into other countries, this can become very, very expensive resulting in massive bill shock. Check that the tracking app you choose has the option to work on a global roaming SIM or at least a local SIM in the country where you spend most of your time.
4. Time-zones
Sounds a simple thing but if you're travelling the world you need a system that is aware of time-zones and local times. GPS tracking apps that have been developed for use in a single country are often restricted to showing all details in a single timezone which makes interpretation difficult.

BFFs - GPS Tracking Technology and Winter Weather

Posted by Zily Magic

You can never be too careful driving in harsh winter weather. GPS tracking can help you more effectively navigate through tough driving conditions.
GPS Tracking has quickly transitioned from a special toy included in the most luxurious cars to a minimum requirement for any drivers in unfamiliar territory. Drivers using the Global Positioning System can effectively track their progress in real time on the road or on trails, saving time and avoiding the dangerous distraction of being lost.
Where a GPS Tracking device is always useful, many people associate the system with long summer joyrides and vacation trips, but in the winter months, GPS Tracking is especially useful. When winter weather provides low visibility and more dangerous roads, drivers can rely on the Global Positioning System much more than having to look through snow and rain for signs, and can better anticipate the need for lane changes and turns to prevent sudden movements in icy conditions. Definitely a lifesaving feature every driver should have onboard.
Inclement winter weather months also mean that the Global Positioning System is used by municipal services, contractors and private companies in the effort to clear snow for the roads and keep transportation systems running smoothly, efficiently and safely. Snow plow drivers and other vehicle drivers can utilize GPS Tracking to monitor each other's movements and coordinate the next location for each. These services improve response time and guarantee that roads are made safe more quickly and intelligently. An urgent task for those of us living with snow and ice.
As an example, the GPS Tracking system employed by US Fleet Tracking provides live updates to snow removal vehicle drivers and their dispatchers. Using the system, critical arteries in infrastructure can be prioritized and cleared in the fastest way possible, and dispatchers can use the Global Positioning System's weather monitoring capabilities to protect drivers from driving into the worst of the elements, protecting them from conditions even too dangerous for the plows at times. The right Global Positioning System can be the difference between clear roads and dangerous roads, both for the snow plow driver looking to keep cars moving, and the individual driver looking for the fastest and safest way to get where they need to go. Make certain when you choose a GPS system that you factor in all of your specific criteria and that the system addresses your needs specifically.

Satellite For GPS Achieves 20 Years In-Orbit

Posted by Zily Magic

Recently the Global Positioning System celebrated its 20th anniversary. The US Air Force program has come a long way and is looking forward to many more years of technology and development.
December 10, 2010 marked the United States Air Force celebration of the twentieth year of GPS systems in orbit around the earth, marking two decades of offering critical mapping data for government, commercial and personal use.
Credit for the success of the Global Positioning System goes to Space Vehicle Number (SVN) 23, launched by Boeing (then the Rockwell Corporation), on November 26, 1990. The satellite was operational for navigation and timing two years later. Though it was expected to last just 7.5 years, with some repairs, it is now slated to live well into its 21st. Originally, the satellite, Boeing's GPS Block IIA-10, appeared to be a failure. In just its first year, the satellite's ability to keep its solar arrays directed toward the sun appeared to be damaged and required the Air Force's 2nd Space Operational Squadron to manually point the arrays toward the sun for fourteen years. The machinery appeared to fix itself three years later. To date, one of the best atomic clocks of the GPS fleet is maintained by the satellite.
The US Air Force continues to have responsibility for the Global Positioning Systems, and work with companies like Boeing to maintain the program, which has become critical to the American infrastructure for government, private businesses and the general public. Currently there are varying models for a total of 31 satellites in the GPS constellation.
In the two decades since its original launch, the Global Positioning System has been used for both military and civilian uses, and the GPS system continues to improve. Boeing launched the first of its twelve IIF satellites in August of 2010, and it is the most advanced Global Positioning System in history.
As Global Positioning Systems become more advanced, programs in space, home control and civilian uses will become nearly perfectly synchronized. With these technological improvements, satellites can utilize GPS to become the standard of timing, positioning and navigation.

GPS and Real Estate

Posted by Zily Magic

When I began in residential real estate agents navigated from home to home the old fashioned way - with a paper map! When Global Positioning Systems (GPS) became available as units mounted on the dashboard, I acquired one. The GPS for me is a critical tool for the practice of residential real estate selling. The last 2 vehicles I have purchased had built-in navigation devices.
The GPS is particularly helpful in those areas where the streets change names frequently or they stop and start in different sections of the community. Arlington, Virginia is one of these communities in which the GPS is extremely helpful. Before having a GPS, oftentimes the buyer client would be in the front seat instructing me on where to turn. With a GPS the buyer and I can focus our conversations, and it allows me to identify more easily for the buyer community amenities and points of interest. Realtors in the listing information often include directions to the home, however those are often written assuming the driver is starting from a central location. But typically when an agent is out showing buyers homes, we are probably not starting at a central location but rather coming from another home in a residential neighborhood. Navigating back to the main roads and then figuring out where one is from that place and getting to the next can be a nightmare! The GPS allows one to focus on driving, rather than worrying about getting lost.
What I found though is that the GPS is not a thinking person! I have had a GPS take me in what I knew was the most out of the way direction. Also the GPS doesn't know about traffic patterns in a community and possible construction sites. So I believe that having a thinking person involved is still the preferred means of navigation. Even with a GPS, I still use a paper map to identify the properties to view and to lay out a plan for the order of the homes to see. Buyers have told me that they appreciate having the full perspective of the area that only a paper map can truly provide. I plug in all of the addresses into the GPS individually; that way if the client decides to change the order of homes to view from what I had originally mapped out, or a seller has requested we arrive at a time frame different from what was originally planned, those changes can easily be accommodated without the GPS having to recalculate the route.
In thinking of the fabulous uses of a GPS as it relates to my life, it made me think of another correlation. I have found that many people think that just by doing some research on the Internet that they can find out everything they need to know about home buying and selling. That would be like believing that a GPS and a paper map is all you need to get around. Again, having a thinking person aboard is still the preferred method! That is the same in navigating the process of home buying and selling, it is still best traveled with a seasoned real estate professional that can assist through the process.
