Recent developments in GPS technologies have incorporated GPS capabilities in the latest models of cell phones. Following the same complex algorithm that GPS devices use to locate points within a given map, smart phone owners can now detect their phone's location based on the signals received from local transmission powers.
Since these mobile devices are enabled to send text messages, make calls, send e-mails and surf the internet, they can now enjoy the benefits of GPS functions particularly during emergency situations. This new set of functionality is true to both CDMA and GSM-based cell phones.
There are many ways in which a cell phone can be located using mobile phone-based GPS functionalities. Using the same satellite network and repeater triangulation algorithm, the system provides GPS-based locator services for various networks.
When cell phone features vary depending on its brand, GPS mobile phone functionalities vary depending on the service features offered by the network provider. This is because the system will locate your phone using the signals coming from the network's transmission towers.
To perform a triangulation system of tracking, it would take about two or more transmission signal readings before a GPS-enabled phone will be located. From such feeds, the system will calculate the distance from where the signal may be coming from and work out the triangle that will fit signal strengths. This way, the third point, which is the actual location of the phone, will be determined.
With some phones, GPS transmissions will be sent when the person who has the phone has made an emergency call. This way, it will guide the police as well as the rescue people to immediately get to that location and administer aid. The accuracy of locating a cell phone via network GPS services is dependent on the strength of signals received, which could be a problem in areas like deserts, wastelands or un-populated countryside where the number radio masts is very limited.
Cell phones may also be tracked using web-based GPS applications. They also follow the same mechanisms used by their networks. To gain access to GPS technology, you need to register your phone to the website that supports, activates and runs on your phone's platform. Fill out its agreement box and choose the download box that corresponds to your brand and model.
Later models of phones are now equipped with GPS chips. Plug in your phone to your computer and start the upload process. Set your preferences. After that, you can run a test on your phone's GPS functions using the website's supported electronic map format, such as Google maps.
Activating your phone's GPS functions via web-based applications gives you the convenience of tracking your phone's location based on the website's up-to-date maps and points of interests.
In addition to civilians, companies are not using cell-phone GPS functions to enjoy practical solutions in enhancing the security of their employees, tracking their location especially when working in remote locations on their own. For concerned parents, this feature allowed them to keep track of their children's location. Aside from locating phones, the additional perks of using GPS-enabled cell phones include convenience and ease in locating new restaurants, shops and other nearby points of interests.

How to Trace a Cell Phone Location

Posted by Zily Magic

New advances in technology have made it possible for anybody to trace a cell phone location.
These advances in technology designed to trace a cell phone location came about as a result of a number of recent events, including the events of September 11, 2001. Technological breakthroughs which have occurred since then include the inclusion of GPS technology in most mobile phones, and an improved ability to detect a phone's location based on signals from local transmission towers.
There are number services on the Internet which allow you to trace the location of a cell phone. They may differ in therms of interface and appearance, butthey are using the same data from the telecom companies.
In the past the only way to gain access to the technology to trace a cell phone location was to buy equipment, and the use of this equipment was largely regulated to official organisations such as the police.
The way these services work is by gathering information from the telecom company that provides the cell phone service. this information includes the location of the cell phone as calculated by a combination of factors including the GPS as previously mentioned, and the distance to each of the nearest cellphone transmission masts. This is the same information which the police get.
There are wide range of reasons why you might want to trace a cell phone location, such as trying to find out where a friend or relative rates while you're out and about, keeping track of the location of a child, meeting up with friends, and trying to find shops and restaurants near you. Companies make use of these services in order to track their employees location, and also to provide security for employees when they are working in a remote location on their own. In the end, there are probably as many reasons as there are users.
The way GPS technology works in modern cell phones varies between the different cellphone networks, and with some operators it does not continuously transmit location. This means that when you want to trace a cell phone location, the information that you will be gathering is most likely collected from transmission tower locations.
The location of the phone will be tracked using triangulation - by taking 2 or more readings, it is possible to calculate where the signal is comming from by working out the triangle that fits the signal strengths. The 3rd point is the location of the phone.
However, when the person who has the phone has made an emergency call, this GPS transmission will always be sent. This is designed to ensure that the police can always track a cell phone location, in order to get help to people who need it.
The result of this design that the accuracy of the location which is provided by the service will be greater in areas which are more populated, and have more radio transmission masts, and will be lower in areas where there are very few radio masts, such is the wastelands, deserts, or un-populated areas of countryside. So, it is easier to track a cell phone location with a high level of accuracy in built up areas.
Nonetheless, most times you trace a cell phone location the information from the cell phone masts should be fine. After all, you do not need to know the person's location with a very great deal of accuracy for most purposes.

The development of communications technology has long since surpassed the sole ability to access others when they are mobile. Today, mobile communication devices are becoming much more technologically advanced and offer more than the ability to just carry on a conversation. Cell phone GPS tracking is one of those advances.
GPS or Global Positioning System tracks your location by interpreting the data received from 3 or more satellites. This has made GPS a popular feature in cars as a navigational aid.
All cell phones constantly broadcast a radio signal, even when not on a call. The phone companies have been able to estimate the location of a mobile phone for many years using triangulation information from the towers receiving the signal. However, the introduction of GPS technology into cell phones has meant that GPS tracking now makes this information a lot more accurate.
With GPS technology now more commonplace in many new cell phones, this means that the location of anyone carrying a compatible phone can be accurately tracked at any time. GPS tracking can therefore be a useful feature for business owners and fleet managers who need to be able to keep track of their vehicle movements.
Mobile phone GPS tracking can also be a useful feature to the emergency services or police when responding to a 911 call from a GPS cell phone. For this reason, the FCC has legislated that wireless networks provide location information for 911 calls made from mobile phones. These are known as E911 calls.
As technology advance even further, future features will be even more powerful. Imagine GPS cell phones used as a navigational device. Based on the GPS tracking signal, they could be used to find your way to a location, calculate your speed based on your location change over time, from this calculate your estimated arrival time, suggest an alternative route and even phone the person you are calling to see with your ETA! Of course in car GPS navigation systems can already perform many of these tasks, however it is the portability of mobile phones that makes them so useful for this technology.
Mobile phone GPS tracking could also be used to locate the whereabouts of your children and offer protection to elderly relatives should something happen and they need urgent assistance.

Cell Phone GPS Tracking - Privacy Issues

Posted by Zily Magic

Although there are many advantages to cell phone GPS tracking, there are also privacy concerns. As most people carry their mobile phone with them at all times, the ability is in place to track the exact movements of all individuals. Is this a case of Big Brother, and who can access to this information?
Cell Phone GPS tracking can prove useful in many walks of life and especially when an emergency arises. Picture the scene of a road accident where injuries have occurred. A 911 call made from a GPS mobile phone would significantly speed up the arrival of the emergency services if the GPS signal from the phone can be pin-pointed to an exact location. This feature alone could save many lives.
For these reasons the FCC has instructed that wireless network providers provide the cell phone GPS tracking location information for 911 calls which have been made by callers. This is known as E911. In essence this is no different than a 911 call made from a land line, as the land line is registered to an address and the relevant emergency services can be quickly dispatched to that address.
However, where the difference occurs is that a property does not move but the tracking of a GPS phone is registering the day to day movements of an individual, and that has given rise to the privacy concerns of who can access such private information.
However, the relevant law relating to E911 is fairly explicit. It allows carriers to provide tracking location information to third parties for e911 emergency calls only, however not under any other circumstances whatsoever without the consent of the mobile phone owner.
The privacy of phone GPS tracking has also been backed up by a number of recent court hearings. Recent court hearings have disallowed the requests of law enforcement agencies to obtain cell phone GPS tracking information from the phone companies for suspects. The courts have ruled that Congress have not authorized location tracking without actual evidence of wrongdoing and that probable cause is not sufficient reason for the release of records.
These events will ensure that the advantages of cell phone GPS tracking will not be compromised by privacy issues and that its long term future and usefulness is secured.
